Finding a Place Lost to Time
A client wanted to discover what an old farm building looked like today. In the early 1980s their school, along with several other schools, had used the building for weekend stays and school trips. They still had the original photographs - but nobody could remember exactly where the building was.
The information available consisted of memories, the farm name, several nearby towns, and the knowledge that it was somewhere on the Yorkshire Moors.
Research was carried out using old maps, records and the original photographs. A likely location was identified and confirmed with the client. The location was then visited.
From the nearest road, reaching the property required a walk of approximately two miles through National Forestry land. The original building was still standing, and present-day photographs were taken from several angles.

I'm based in Lincolnshire, but ancestor location photography is available across the UK. If the place connected to your family is further away, I'll calculate the travel involved and agree the cost with you before making the journey.
Where possible, several locations can be combined into one trip, which can help reduce the overall travel cost.
COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT ANCESTOR LOCATION PHOTOGRAPHY
What types of places can you photograph?
Ancestral homes, graves and gravestones, cemeteries, churches, churchyards, farms, workplaces, streets, villages, schools and other places connected to your family history.
What if I don't know exactly where the place is?
That's not necessarily a problem. If you have an old address, photograph, family story, place name or other clue, I may be able to research the location before planning a visit.
Can you photograph a grave or gravestone for me?
Yes. Where the grave can be identified and access is permitted, I can photograph the grave, headstone and surrounding cemetery or churchyard.
Do you cover locations outside Lincolnshire?
Yes. The service is available nationwide across the UK. Travel time and mileage are calculated from Lincoln and agreed before the visit.
How much does location photography cost?
Photography and research time is £20 per hour, with mileage charged at 25p per mile from Lincoln and back to Lincoln. Longer projects of four hours or more may qualify for a small discount.
How will I receive my photographs?
Photographs are supplied digitally as high-resolution images that you can keep, print and share.
