As much or as little as you have. A starting point might be a grandparent's name and approximate birth date, or a family story about where someone came from. I'll review what you share and let you know what research is possible before any work begins.

It depends on the records that survive for your family. Most English and Welsh families can be traced back to the early 1800s, and often into the 1700s where parish records survive. Scottish and Irish research can reach similar periods where records exist.

It varies with the scope of the project and what records survive. A single family line usually takes a few weeks, while larger projects take longer. I'll give you an estimated timescale with your quote

If a particular line can't be taken further, I'll explain why in plain English and suggest alternative approaches. Research time already spent is still due, but I'll always be honest about what is and isn't possible before you commit.

No reputable researcher can guarantee a specific result, records simply may not survive. What I can guarantee is careful, methodical research and an honest account of what was found and what the evidence supports.

A GEDCOM is a universal file format for family trees. It lets you import your researched tree into most genealogy software and websites, so you can keep building it yourself in future.

Digitally. You receive a researched family tree, a GEDCOM file, digital copies of the records discovered, and folders organised for each individual, labelled with full name, date of birth and date of death (left blank if the person is still living).

Yes. The standard service is digital, but family tree charts can be professionally printed on request. The cost depends on chart size and complexity, and printed binders or copies of the research can also be quoted separately if you'd like.

My specialist area is UK and Irish family history. For families with overseas branches, I can often advise and may be able to help depending on the records available, just ask.

Yes. Some Scottish genealogy records operate on a pay-per-view basis, and those costs are charged separately at cost. I'll always flag any additional charges before ordering anything.

Official birth, marriage or death certificates may occasionally be required to positively confirm that the correct person has been identified. When that happens, the certificate is charged separately at cost. No additional costs are ever incurred without your agreement first.

Yes. I can review existing DNA results, analyse matches, identify shared matches and group them into probable family branches. I don't perform DNA tests - you use results you already have from AncestryDNA, MyHeritage, FamilyTreeDNA or another recognised testing service.

Not at all. DNA is one tool among many. If you already have results, I can help you make sense of them. If you haven't tested, traditional documentary research may be all you need.

Yes. Gravestone and churchyard photography is available across the UK as part of ancestor location photography. I'll confirm the location and travel costs before any visit.

Yes. If a family home, farm or workplace still stands, I can photograph it from several angles and provide location details, parking and walking directions.

Location photography is available nationwide within the UK. Travel is charged at 25p per mile from Lincoln, return journey, and is always quoted in advance.

Often, yes. Combining locations on one trip usually saves on travel costs. I'll plan the route with you and quote the total before any visit.

If a site has been demolished or a stone is unreadable or gone, I'll tell you honestly and supply any evidence of what remains - including research notes on the area's history. You only pay for the research and travel time carried out.
