RECORDS YOU CAN'T QUITE READ
Sometimes you have the record but not the meaning. I can help read old handwriting, interpret historical records and explain what a document may reveal about your family history.
HOW I CAN HELP
Whatever the document, I help you read it, interpret it and understand what it means for your family history.

Reading difficult handwriting
I'll help decipher difficult handwriting and explain what the document appears to say.

Interpreting census records
I'll help interpret census entries, abbreviations and clues that may not be immediately obvious.

Parish register interpretation
I'll help interpret baptism, marriage and burial entries, including abbreviations and faded writing.

Identifying names and places
I'll investigate unclear names, unfamiliar places and locations that may have changed over time.

Old terminology & occupations
I'll explain unfamiliar historical terms, occupations and descriptions found within old family records.

Newspaper records
I'll help interpret notices, reports and advertisements that may reveal more about your ancestors.

Probate & military documents
I'll help interpret wills, probate records and military documents containing unfamiliar terminology.

Explaining what a record means
I'll explain what the record tells us and how it may fit into your family history.
WHAT CAN I SEND?
You can send me a photograph, scan, screenshot or digital copy of the record you're struggling with. Tell me what you already know, where the record came from and what you're hoping to discover.
You don't need to know what type of record it is before getting in touch. If I can identify it, read it or help explain what it means, I'll let you know what's possible before any work begins.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT HISTORICAL RECORD HELP
Yes. I can help decipher difficult historical handwriting and explain what the document appears to say. Some documents may be affected by damage, fading or image quality, so not every word can always be recovered.
These can include census records, parish registers, certificates, wills and probate records, military documents, newspapers, electoral records and other historical family documents.
Yes. Send me a clear image of the document and any information you have about where it came from. I can first look at whether I'm able to identify and interpret it.
Yes. Historical records often contain occupations, abbreviations and terminology that are no longer commonly used. I can help explain these in the context of the record.
Potentially. Place names, parish boundaries and administrative areas have changed over time, so I can investigate unfamiliar locations where enough information survives.
I'll distinguish between what can be read with reasonable confidence, what is uncertain and what cannot reliably be deciphered rather than guessing at missing information.
